A guide to the weird and wonderful fish of the region will be launched at a Fishcare clinic in Warrnambool on Wednesday December 5.

A joint project between Glenelg Hopkins CMA and Fishcare, A Field Guide to the Fish of the Glenelg Hopkins region provides comprehensive information on the most common fish found in the lakes, rivers and creeks of south western Victoria.

Southwest Fishcare Co-ordinator, Scott Gray said it is an excellent resource for anyone interested in fish, whether it be recreational or environmental.

“Fishcare was really pleased to work with Glenelg Hopkins CMA on producing such a valuable tool for the community.”

“There is a diverse range of fish fauna found in the region, including a number of native fish that are classified as vulnerable or endangered in Victorian waters.”

“This guide will work towards educating the community about some of the amazing lifecycles and habitats of fishes in the region and we hope that this will ultimately lead to their conservation for future generations,” Mr Gray said.

The Field Guide provides also information about the biology with a full colour image of each species to aid identification.

A Field Guide to the Fish of the Glenelg Hopkins region was funded by the State and Australian Governments, Glenelg Hopkins CMA and Fishcare.icon A Field Guide to the Fishes of the Glenelg Hopkins Region (2.81 MB)

Local Fish In Focus - Port Phillip Region Print E-mail
Written by Scott Gray

Local Fish In Focus FlyersA great range of interesting and informative products for Victoria’s recreational anglers are to be released over the coming months by Fishcare Victoria.

At this year’s Melbourne Fishing Show and Outdoors Expo, Fishcare launched the second set of five brochures in the popular Port Phillip - Local Fish in Focus brochure series.

If you want to know more about catching yellow-eye mullet, silver trevally, mulloway, Australian salmon and black bream, then grab yourself a set of Local Fish in Focus brochures from Fishcare or tackle store.

This colourfully illustrated production introduces the angler to the biology and habitat of each species, as well as the all important information on how, where and when to catch them in Port Phillip.

Anglers are encouraged to take a responsible approach to fishing, through simple techniques such as supporting fish with wet hands or a wet cloth.

Fishcare are excited to announce that funding from the Recreational Fishing Licence Trust and Recreational Fishing Community Grants Program will see an additional print run of the ten Local Fish in Focus brochures and extension to a further five species, which will be available early in 2008.

Funding will also see reprints of the popular What’s Under the Water? children’s activity book, Know Your Catch – Snapper brochure, and a series of children’s stickers, and the production of the next two Know Your Catch brochures – black bream and dusky flathead.

Request a full set of Local Fish in Focus brochures and other Fishcare publications on the Fishcare website, www.fishcare.org.au.

Fishcare has just released three new ‘Weigh Your Catch’ ruler products which allow recreational anglers to estimate the weight and age of estuarine species based purely on their length.

“Designed to be stuck onto the side of a boat, the rulers improve the health of black bream, estuary perch and dusky flathead that are released by reducing the time they spend out of the water,” said Fishcare’s Scott Gray who led the development of the products.
