What's under the water?
Recreational anglers have never before had such a large suite of free educational and informative resources to access, with information ranging from how to catch popular recreational target species to the latest available research information.  The project is a huge benefit for Victorian recreational anglers with 220,000 units of 20 publications produced!  Check out the entire 'Local Fish in Focus' brochure series, learn more about the biology of snapper, bream and duskty flathead in the  'Know your catch' brochures or download the 'What's under the water activity book' kids resource online on the resources page of our website at www.fishcare.org.au

Fishcare Victoria has just released three new 'Fish in Focus' brochures as part of a $29,050 Commonwealth Recreational Fishing Community Program Grant titled 'Fishcare forges inland'.  The new educational products focus on the popular redfin, brown trout and rainbow trout.  Special thanks to Richard Rogala and Fishcare Central Highlands for all of their hard work in bringing the project together.  Download a copy of the new brochures below or request a hard copy of the brochures online through the resources section of this website.

Dusky Flathead 'Know your catch' lealfet - East Gippsland Region Print E-mail

Did you know that dusky flathead have been aged at 15 years from Victorian estuaries? Or that despite being a bottom dwelling fish they have been found to exhibit broad scale movement patterns?  Learn more about one of Victoria’s most popular estuarine target fish species in the latest edition of the ‘Know your catch’ series of brochures produced by Fishcare Victoria.

This full colour A4 sized publication contains interesting information about the biology (including age and growth), movement, post release survival and tips for releasing unwanted and undersize fish and is based on current research conducted by Fisheries Victoria.

“It is a real bonus for anglers to be able to understand more about the biology of such an important recreational target fish species.  The dusky flathead is one of the most important recreational target species in the East Gippsland region’ said Fishcare facilitator, Scott Gray who was involved in the development of the product.

“There is plenty of detailed information in this new brochure about the lifecycle, released fish survival and some handy tips on things you can do to help reduce deep hooking and increase the survival chances of  released fish.

Fishcare Victoria continues to distinguish itself as the prominent educator of Victorian recreational anglers.The brochures were produced as part of $101,000 project titled Fishcare Publications – a suite of educational materials for recreational anglers funded by Fishcare Victoria, which includes a $43,400 grant awarded to Fishcare East Gippsland Inc. from Round 5 of the Australian Government’s Recreational Fishing Community Grants Program, and $12,500 from the 07/08 Victorian Recreational Fishing Grants Program.

You can view the new product, request or download a pdf file of this product online from the resources page of our new look website www.fishcare.org.au  They will also be available from selected retail tackle stores. The dusky flathead brochure is the third in the series of the ‘Know your catch’ project and follows the highly acclaimed snapper and black bream products.
